Simple Organ Dissection Module
(including appendix, lipoma, thyroid, and uterus)
(including appendix, lipoma, thyroid, and uterus)
This module is designed with the assumption that all learners have no prior dissection (or grossing) experience. The main goal is to provide information and training in safe grossing practices (personal and patient safety), which will set the foundation for future complex neoplastic gross training and specimen handling.
It is not the goal of this module to provide an in-depth review of pathology and the grossing of specific pathological conditions and/or specimens. The workshop will be administered in a low-stakes learning environment where the individuals can apply the principles learned in a simulation setting with no risk to patient care.
The module incorporates elements of interactive learning, with visual aids that include virtual 3D models of surgical specimens and simulated specimen handling. Physical simulation material includes silicone and gelatin models to mimic medium-fidelity specimens and assist learners with specimen orientation, inking, and sectioning. The goal of the module is to provide a progressive learning structure, starting from basic knowledge concepts and gradually moving towards more complex specimen handling. In this case, simulation is incorporated to bridge the transition to gross room and handling of patient material.
Collaborative learning, such as group discussion and peer-to-peer learning, is highly encouraged. Learners can share experiences and insights to foster a collaborative learning environment and provide feedback to improve this program.
This module will consist of two main parts:
Universal precautions
Personal protective equipment (PPE)
Handling and disposing of sharps
Importance of keeping an organized and clean grossing bench
Importance of cleaning instruments
Knowing your limitations and when to ask questions
Accessing standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Patient and specimen identification
Patient history/clinical information and gross correlation
Tissue fixation, decalcification, processing
The information learned in Part 1 will be applied to four different specimen types. The learner will read the SOP, review the anatomy, and then apply the safe grossing practices and SOPs for dissection (describe, ink and section) of simulated specimens.
